🏦 Introduction
The Riksbank has recently published updates for the new payment statistics reporting which will begin in autumn 2026. In connection, it has announced which reporting entities will be subject to deviating frequencies and updated its Q&A. The new requirements cover a wide range of payment service providers – from credit institutions and payment institutions to electronic money institutions, as well as foreign payment service providers operating in Sweden.
📅 Schedule and Frequency
From 1 October 2026, reporting entities shall collect data on payments (excluding credit transfers). The first ordinary reporting deadline falls on 8 October 2026, but entities informed by the Riksbank in the second quarter of 2026 of a deviating reporting frequency may commence reporting at a later date according to Table 1.
| Frequency | Payment statistics period | First reporting deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 2026-10-01 → 2026-10-07 | 2026-10-08 |
| Monthly | 2026-10-01 → 2026-10-31 | 2026-11-12 |
| Quarterly | 2026-10-01 → 2026-12-31 | 2027-01-29 |
| Annually | 2026-10-01 → 2026-12-31 | 2027-01-29 |

In addition, information on the number of cards, payment accounts, POS terminals, ATMs and e-money card terminals as of 31 December 2026 must be reported by 29 January 2027. From 1 October 2027, reporters shall collect data on credit transfers, with a first reporting deadline of 11 November 2027.
📰 News from the Riksbank
As reporting under RBFS 2025:1 must be submitted via the Riksbank's API in JSON format – both at transaction level and in aggregated form across up to 17 different templates – it entails a substantial amount of work to prepare the reporting. Practical guidance is available in the Riksbank’s Q&A, which addresses everything from API connection and reporting logic to timelines and communication. At the beginning of July, the Q&A was expanded with a number of new clarifications, including that the assessment and notification of deviating reporting frequency for credit transfers will take place during the second quarter of 2027.
Simultaneously, the validation rules for card payments were adapted to approve non-distance payments for non-electronic card payments. Furthermore, the Riksbank has recently changed the instruction on its website regarding the date for the first annual and quarterly reporting deadline, from 31 January 2027 to 29 January 2027, in accordance with RBFS 2025:1 Section 6.

💡 Next Steps
At NFC, we see two primary challenges for our clients regarding the implementation of the Riksbank’s new reporting requirements:
- Ensuring that the correct reporting templates are populated with accurate statistics.
- Building a reporting solution that meets the Riksbank's technical requirements.
The implementation requires technical expertise to handle JSON validation against the Riksbank's Pydantic schemas, secure authentication, and robust integration with the REST API. Given the complexity of the technical requirements and the tight timeline, we recommend that implementation commence as soon as possible to ensure accurate and seamless reporting.
If you require support with your payment statistics reporting, we at NFC can assist you throughout the entire process. Read more about our regulatory reporting services or contact us today for assistance with preparing and submitting correct reports on time.
